Borderland Postcards

Received this letter today:

"Dear Living Landscapes Delegate,

Are you ready to perform your own imaginative visitation? Perhaps liberate your inner landscape?
We invite you to join in our light-hearted but serious intervention...

Borderland Postcards is a particpatory event that encourages conference delegates to relfect on the boundaries and methodologies of ethnographic and interdisciplinary research. Photographs and other visual images are commonly used in all our work, but how are they interpreted by our readers or viewers? What message do they really convey? Where we the researcher see a symbol, a significance, an illustration, what lies beneath the image for another pair of eyes? What borders and boundaires do we set?

Here's one of a collection of ten picture postcards, representing an undisclosed European borderland which may be geographical, cultural, social, political, historical and environmental.

What thoughts does it provoke? What links do you make? What questions does it raise? Please use your postcard as a trigger for your own performative intervention - we invite you to respond to this image in any way you desire!
Words, drawing, poetry, collage....whatever creative response you want to make can be put on the image/blank side of the card and posted back to us at the address below before Friday 12th June.

Alternatively you can bring your card with you to Aberystwyth and come and find us near the conference reception on the campus, where we'll be displaying your postcards and we'll also be revealing the true identity of the border locations...

Looking forwad to meeting you and sharing border tales!"
